Defining Democracy

In “The Good State” A. C. Grayling provides this definition of democracy:

Democracy is a political system in which the people appoint a government and instruct it to legislate and administer on their behalf, protecting and enhancing their interests by responsible and informed action. The concept of democracy requires that we see government as the servant of the people, accountable to them and removable by them if it does not fulfil its function appropriately and adequately.

We need to consider if our version of democracy
