Or is there? Watching Australia burn and the Federal Government seemingly paralysed, I was reminded of the last few seconds of “On The Beach”.
For those who haven’t seen the movie, or read Neville Shute’s book, it is the tale of the last few remaining humans as the fallout from nuclear war spreads around the globe. Melbourne, Australia, is the city that will be the last to suffer the effects, the last living souls, and the last to die. Death will be inevitable.
The book and movie are from the height of the Cold War when children went to bed at night with nightmares of mushroom clouds, and parents wondered just what sort of a world they had created.
Not by good management, but by good luck, we were spared a bullet that time. Can we be so lucky a second time?
